When I arrived in the United Kingdom as an international student, I knew I wanted to make the most of my time here. While good grades were important to me, I understood early on that education is not only about books and exams. It is also about building character, forming connections, and preparing for the real world beyond the classroom.
One of the most defining decisions I made was choosing to be proactive. I did not wait for opportunities to come to me. I went out to find them. I volunteered at Cardiff Central Library. At first, it seemed like a simple way to stay engaged. But that decision opened doors I never expected. I met mentors who were genuinely interested in guiding me. They helped me understand how things worked in this new environment and offered advice I could not have found in any textbook. Cardiff Central Library
I also joined the university ambassador and served as a school navigator. These roles gave me the chance to represent the school, support prospective students, and gain real leadership experience. I was learning how to speak with confidence, solve problems on the go, and work in teams across diverse backgrounds. I was building a portfolio of soft skills that many employers are looking for.
What many students often do not realize is that after graduation, references and experience matter just as much as academic performance. Because I chose to be proactive, I had people who could vouch for me. I had hands-on experience that stood out on my CV. I had stories to tell in interviews that reflected my growth and commitment.
If you are an international student today, here is my advice to you:
Be visible. Be involved. Be proactive.
You may not understand the value of these actions immediately, but in time, they will serve you well. They will become your edge. And most importantly, they will help shape you into a more confident and capable version of yourself.
Your future self will thank you.
