Growing up, I couldn’t wait to become an adult. No more asking for permission. No more school uniforms. No more waiting for someone else to make decisions for me. Adulthood looked like freedom. Nobody told me freedom comes with invoices. Nobody told me peace would become expensive. Nobody told me that some days, being an adult simply means pretending you’re okay until you actually are.
Have you noticed how everyone seems to have life figured out online? One person is buying a house. Another is travelling the world. Someone else just got promoted. Someone is celebrating a six-figure business. And there you are…Trying to remember whether you replied to that email. Wondering if you paid the right bill. Trying to stay strong while silently carrying things you don’t even know how to explain.Sometimes adulthood isn’t glamorous.Sometimes it’s eating leftovers because you’re too tired to cook.
Sometimes it’s smiling at work after crying in the car.Sometimes it’s saying, “I’m good,” because you don’t have the energy to explain why you’re not. Sometimes it’s making one difficult phone call you’ve been avoiding for days. Sometimes it’s discovering that life doesn’t always reward good intentions.
The older I get, the more I realise that adults are just people trying their best with the information they have. Nobody has all the answers. Some are just better at hiding the questions. That’s probably why this moodboard looks the way it does. The torn paper reminds me that life rarely unfolds neatly. Plans tear. Relationships tear.Dreams tear.Confidence tears.Yet somehow, we keep sticking the pieces together.
The graphite texture isn’t polished. Neither are we. Life has a way of rubbing against us until it reveals details we never knew were there. Then there are the words.
Ambition. Because even when life gets messy, our dreams refuse to disappear.
Fearless. Not because fear is absent, but because courage often shows up while our hands are still shaking.
I have a different opinion. Because I’ve stopped believing adulthood is about having everything under control. I think adulthood is learning to carry uncertainty without letting it carry you.Maybe that’s why so many of us joke that we’re “avoiding adulthood.”We’re not really avoiding it. We’re surviving it. One day at a time. One decision at a time. One lesson at a time. If you’re reading this and wondering whether you’re behind in life, maybe you’re not. Maybe you’re just human. And maybe adulthood isn’t about becoming someone who never struggles.Maybe it’s about becoming someone who keeps showing up anyway.
So here’s my different opinion.None of us really has life figured out. Some of us have simply become more comfortable admitting it. And strangely enough…I think that’s what growing up actually looks like.
What part of adulthood do you think nobody prepared us for?
